Valentines day.  We exchanged Valentines and had a nice, small celebration.

  • On Tuesday, we celebrated the 100th day of school.  We had a visit from Ms. Count who showed up ready to party on day 99.  The kids told her to come back the next day. She helped lead a lesson on counting 100 objects by making ten groups of ten.  On the 100th day we ate our 100 pieces of snack, did 100 exercises, and saw how far 100 steps would take us in the school. We also had a visit from “Zero the Hero” who sang songs and talked about the importance of the number 0.
  • During Literacy Stations, we made Valentines for our families, we played a variety of sight word games, and we continued with reading groups.  In reading groups, we are learning more and more strategies to help us when we reach puzzling words.
  • In Math, children applied their growing knowledge of combinations to five to solve word problems.  We continue to practice counting every single day in math.

  • Owlie’s and Strega Nona’s sight word was “do.”  (Sight words introduced so far: I, see, a, the, my, we, go, like, and, is, to, can, you, it, little, at, an, on, in, do)
  • February break: We will have no school from Monday, February 25th to Tuesday, March 5th.  School will resume on Wednesday, March 6th.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Matt and Caitlin

February 8th News!

Here are some highlights from our week in Kindergarten:

  • We continue to work on our How-to books during Writer’s Workshop.  This past week we started adding tips and warnings. For example, one child was writing a book about how to skate.  The helpful warning she added to her how-to book was, “be careful, the ice is slippery!”

  • In Math, we played a game called “What’s in the Box?” with cuisenaire rods to solve number sentences to five.  Children used rods to solve addition problems as well as missing addends to make 5. We also solved word problems to continue practice with addition within five.  We are starting to learn the names of the rods up to ten. We also practiced counting to 100 to help us count out 100 objects. We organized our objects into 10 piles of 10 and counted by tens.
  • We talked about punctuation in our reading.  We talked about how punctuation is like a secret code that tells us how to read words in a book.  You use a different voice for an exclamation point, question mark, and period. It changes the way you read.

  • Owlie’s and Strega Nona’s sight words were “on” and “in.”  (Sight words introduced so far: I, see, a, the, my, we, go, like, and, is, to, can, you, it, little, at, an, on, in)
  • We had another fun week of winter wellness! Check out the video below of some of our kindergarten hip-hoppers!

Here are some important notes, dates, and reminders:

  • 100th day:  On Tuesday, February 12th we will celebrate the one hundredth day of school.  We will be celebrating with a potluck snack. Please refer to the note we sent home about bringing in one hundred small food items for a hundreds day gorp.  If this is a challenge for you to do at home, we can help support kids here at school. Just let us know.
  • Valentine’s Day:  We will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Thursday, February 14th.   Please try to avoid sending in candy and sweet treats.  People are welcome to bring in Valentines, but this is something no one should feel pressure to do.  If you do bring in Valentines, make sure that your child brings one in for everyone in the class. Refer to the note we sent home today.
  • All-School Meeting: We have an all-school meeting on Thursday, February 14th from 2:45 – 3:30.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Matt and Caitlin
